ABOUT ABDUL WILLIAMS
Abdul got his start working in feature film development. He began as a development assistant for director Carl Franklin’s Monarch Pictures, Denzel Washington’s Mundy Lane Entertainment, and finally as a junior executive at Lorne Michaels’ SNL Studios (the movie division of Saturday Night Live). For Abdul…this was his film school. Constantly reading screenplays taught him the rules of the craft, and greatly improved his own writing. A well-received spec script led to his first paid writingassignment in 2003. Once he was able to support himself through writing, he left development behind for good. A second spec script led to more writing assignments in 2004. Abdul was hired by MGM to write a father/son mafia comedy called “DON
CORNELIUS.” Miramax hired him to adapt their novel “BLING”, a satire of the music industry. MGM then hired Abdul for a second assignment, an untitled college comedy about the first white student body president at an all-black university. In 2006, he sold “LOTTERY TICKET” (based on an idea by director Erik White) to Rogue Pictures, who then put it into turnaround, and it was subsequently optioned and bought by Alcon Entertainment. The movie, directed by Erik White, and starring Bow Wow, Ice Cube, Brandon T. Jackson, Naturi Naughton, and Loretta Devine opened in 2010 and grossed $24.5 million at the box office. In 2012, Abdul wrote another comedy for Alcon, “CON ED”, about a pair of escaped convicts hiding out on a college campus and posing as students. Abdul recently ventured into animation, writing “SURF’S UP 2” for Sony Pictures Animation. This past January Abdul received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writer for a Movie or Special for writing THE NEW EDITION STORY a three-night miniseries about the iconic group New Edition, that premiered January 2017 on BET.
